Bill Bradd 1942 London Walthamstow
I started my job as a telegram boy messenger in 1942, I went too two or three different Post Offices, I went to Walthamstow office in east London and during my time there I joined the NFS which was the fire service at nights till morning . The German Bombers came over one particular night and they were bombing houses all around
Us messenger boys on duty one night were called out to attend an incident in a road which was badly hit by a large bomb and destroyed many houses.
My job was to stand at the end of the road and direct ambulances and other vehicles, whilst doing this a Fireman called to me to go into a house with him, we could hardly get up the stairs because of the ceiling falling down and the rubbish around it was like a skating rink , an old man was laying in his bed trapped by his roof beam., the Fireman sent me to the Fire Engine to get a saw which I did, once I fetched it back the Fireman began to saw through the roof beam which he did and finally removed the beam from the man trapped in his bed , we then brought the man downstairs to an ambulance that was waiting. I thought the Fireman was very brave as the roof could have collapsed on him
I got to the age of 16 passed the motorcycle test and I then went to my new office at forest gate East London I enjoyed my time on the motorbikes, the worst part was taking telegrams to people whose love ones were killed in action.
At the age of 18 I was called up in the army as a dispatch rider in the Royal Signals, and spent two years in Egypt,
After I was demobbed I went back to the post office and became a PHG in the Parcel Office for a short time in London from there I went next door to Mount Pleasant sorting office and after that I went on to the T.P.O. mail trains (London to Carlisle) after 3 years on the TPO I returned to Mount Pleasant and got a job in the label room I stayed there until I retired
I was in the Post Office nearly fifty years (Just a few days under)
I also received an Honour from the Queen
The Imperial Medal
(Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously please to reward to you in recognition of the meritorious services which you have rendered)
Please excuse any spelling mistakes or grammar I shall be 80 in May 2008
