I was a Telegram Messenger Boy in Oldham Lancashire on leaving school at 15 years (1950)
I worked as a telegram messenger boy for 3 years until 1953 when I did my National Service in the R.A.F.
For the first two years as a messenger we used Bicycles and then we had BSA Bantams Motor Cycles (125cc)
Whilst I was working at the Post Office in Oldham working in the Telegraph office was a Lady called Barbra Knox ,nee Brothwood ? but better known as Rita Fairclough of "Coronation Street Soap"
Also The Nations Offical Hangman , Mr Albert Pierrepoint, he was the licensee of the 'Help The Poor Struggle' the public house of Manchester Road, Hollinwood, nr Oldham The name of the 'Pub' is an approriate name for a Hangman
When Mr Albert Pierrepoint was due to perform a Hanging, a few days before he used to receive a Telegram from the Home Office which read 'ARE YOU STILL AT LIBERTY' in which he used to reply to the Home Office 'AT LIBERTY'
These were just a few of my memories of my time as a Telegram Messenger Boy which were fantasic times
