The trouble is, we are a part of a dying breed us 'messenger's' and I have stayed away for sometime, shame on me, although to be honest I had a quadruple heart by-pass recently and had other thins on my mind as I am a full time carer for the wife. I am sure some of you can give a few minuets of you time and say HELLO, or just tell me to vacate the building! It seems we have quite a few visits to the forum, come on give an old guy some reason to be in the land of the living. Ist visitor to post's gets a prize? Munchie.

Hi Jim,
I'm sure someone will be along soon and hopefully have knowledge on the 30/40's and help you with your book, unfortunately my time was in the 60's.
Best of Luck,
Mike.

Hi Rodger,
Well now your asking, so had to have a con-flab with the wife! Apparently we had a weekly wadge packets and for the life of me I cant remember how much my wadges were, the wife was on £4.8s so i'm guessing somewhere around £3 to £4.
Defiantly did not have any tokens for food, but the canteen was above the main post Office. Grays was a small office with just four boys, three bikes and one push bike. Never in three years did I ever take a reply to a telegram, and the wife says it was never offered as a service.
A typical 9am to 5pm working-day but there was a rota that one boy stayed on till 7pm with a Sunday delivery from 9am to 11am or 12 mid day, not to sure about what times we finished on Sunday!
We all got on very well with one or two strange characters over the years, but no scraps as we were to busy meeting up at various locations for a fag and cup of tea!
I take it that you had a much larger office in Birmingham then!
Munchie.

Yep, still being ignored on another forum, Guess it must be me then! Although some people only contact or reply when they want something. I would like to point out that it is only one person and not the entire forum!!!

My name is Lee Coldwell I was a Telegram Lad from 1967 to 1969 (my parents had the Penny Black opposite the telegram delivery room on flat street) The lads who worked there at that time- Pete Carr- Pete Watson- Bob Ward-Alan Flack- Dave Denton -John Ring to name a few, the PHGs at the time were Ken Galley and Jack Hobson ?. We rode the BSA Bantams and had a whale of a time (looking back) we used to meet up and go scrambling on ivy cottage lane, the motor cycle mechanic (paddy) went mad when he saw the bikes and report us. On the whole very enjoyable days.Lee Coldwell I totally agree there!

The Bantams are exactly the same setup as we used in Essex, windshields, mirrors, canvas type post bags and material type cowling! amazing.
