I started as a Temp when I was 13 in 1947 at the Guildford PO, worked after school, week-ends and school holidays, when I left school at 15 I became full-time and at that time I think it was the best job any teenager could have. Admitted you were out in all weathers but it sure beat being stuck in an office or tied to a boring apprenticeship, besides at 16 you were trained to ride a M/Cycle, every teenagers dream, back in them days it was the closest we could ever come to owning one, we battled to pay off push bikes back then.
I was called up for N/S at 18 and never did go back to the Post Office, something I don't regret, the pay was poor as a postman and I beleive you did'ent come on to full pay until you were 25. I see the closest member you have to Guildford is someone in Woking so I should get in touch with with him, I used to live out on the Woking Rd before moving to Australia and also drove London Transport buses on routs through Woking.
