High everybody, great to find your site, I was not a mopper but a YIT (youth in training or apprentice mechanic). I started on August 14th 1967 at GPO Garage 44 Norwood Road, London SE27, just up the road from Brockwell Park.
As a 16 year old I was entitled to free Luncheon Vouchers but there was no canteen at the garage so I was taken daily to Norwood TDO where there was canteen.
After completion of the meal I had to ring the garage to be collected, as one would expect I was often left there all afternoon.
As part of my training I spent 2 weeks working at Norwood TDO as we had no bikes at the garage.
As a motorbike mad youth I got on well with the moppers but cannot remember any of their names, the PHG was Harry Jingle who as I recall travelled up from Dover, I think the supervisor/Inspector was Monty but cannot remember any more.
Left the PO after 8 years, probably the worst decision I made, I spent many years in Local Government retiring a couple of years ago, holding an HGV licence I thought I would sign on with an agency.
When I went to the agency they made the wonderful statement "if you are willing to drive class1 we can get you on a peach of a job over the Christmas", answers "Oh yes and what's that?". their reply "It's with Royal Mail", I just knew straightaway.
Anyway here I am nearly 2 years later still driving for Royal Mail through the agency.
The training I received from the GPO was brilliant and like others on here I learnt so much about man management and people skills from my early supervisors, wonderful days, and yes I still have bikes
Best wishes to you all
