I started work with Birmingham HPO as a messenger straight from school in 1955 walking around Birmingham City centre. In 1956 I managed to escape the boring walking and got a place at Fordrough Lane taking the post around the Test Section. This very tedious routine was broken once a week when we were required to attend a day of education a Cadburys (loved the chocolate drinks). When the opportunity came for motor bike training I was first to volunteer. After training I was sent to Hockley and began my best two year with the Post Office from 1957 to 1959. Because national service had ended I became a Postman age 19 working shifts up town or back at Hockley during 1960 and 1961. From that date I obtained a transfer to the Post Office Telephones where I stayed until retirement after 38 years age 55 in 1994.
