Roy Bush 1944-46 Nottingham
I was a Telegram Messenger boy in 1944 – 1946 at Queens Street Post Office Nottingham, such a lot of happy memories.
One such memory, was a Telegram to a big house at Wollaton Nottingham, the lady was waiting for the news of her loved one, when she opened the yellow envelope (telegram) there was a big smile, then she gave me a pound note, such a lot of money in those days.
I remember seeing the Gold-Fish like many who had just joined, Gold-Fish I hear you say yes this was when the older messenger would hold the new recruited messengers over a large sink of water and dunk you upside down (head) then pull you out asking have you seen the Gold FIsh if you said no they would do it again . That was your new welcome from your fellow messenger boys Great Days !!!
Lots of good friends, Johnny Gardner, and his younger brother who never came back from North Korea. Messengers, Pete Cheetham (his mother repaired our trousers) Dennis Straw, George Boultby, Ray Topley, Johnny Spencer, Bob Litchfield and a load more that are at the back of my memory
We did have to go out in all weathers and to this day, I hate the rain
I remember Stan Day, who was on the shute from the Instrument Room, Mr Furness (Inspector) Mr Scott
What a wonderful organisation the G.P.O. WAS
