Hi I was a Telegram Messenger Boy in 1939-40 before moving to the Post Office Engineering Department. You may not be aware that entry into the whole of the Home Civil Service for a 14 year old was either as a Boy Messenger or a Test Room Boy telephone side (not many of those , I knew two) or as a girl probationer. These 14 year olds were ones who had not passed the exam for what was then called the secondary school. I was at Bolton ,Lancs H.P.O. and we did not have motor bikes , my cycle was an "all day onion model", a large frame with double crossbar because of the long frame size At the time of being a Telegram Messenger boy we had to do our turn at "Fire Watching" duty 14 to 15 As a telegram messenger boys we had a Captain Arthur as Head Post Master (HPM) we worked from 9am TO 5pm At 9am we went on parade for inspection by our HPM which included our bicycles At 16 years old we were called up into the G.P.O. Home Guard and then I joined the Army at 19 years old Then I went into the Post Office Engineering Department and moved around the North West Region until retiring in 1985 with 46 years service Photo below John Makin 1939-1940 Bolton Telegram Messenger Boy John Makin
