As a wag we did get some good numbers occasionaly. I can not remember how I got this job but for about a year 1965/6, I used to work with the Daily Mail sports photographer at all the Birmingham football grounds on match days in the week. At the match I had to sit with photographer on the touch line, Once he took a 'good' shot he would change films and I would take the film to the Daily Mail office in Bristol St. Not the Birmingham Mail. The photo was then developed and sent over the 'wire' to Fleet St for inclusion in the next days newspaper. As soon as I had delivered the film to Bristol St I had to go back to the match ready for the next film. Some games you could have about four trips. However as with all things there was a down side. You never knew who was watching the match and watching you! Several times the Inspector of messengers Wilf Cox was there but also I was seen by the Asst Superintendant of Telegraphs Archie Maddocks who sent for me the next day to comment on my muddy shoes!! The Head Postmaster saw me at Villa Park and as no one had told him about this Job he was none to pleased and for once Archie Maddocks was sent for.
This nice little number was the opening for me to work at the 1966 World Cup at Villa Park, doing a similar job but this time taking both films and written reports back to Aston University where the Press Office was set up.
